West Park House Tour Treats

I’ve been MIA from the kitchen lately, working long days out of town and preparing our home for the West Park House Tour. This is the first year we participated and with 300 tickets sold in advance, the Association printed an extra 150! While it was stressful with all the goings-on at our real jobs, my hubby and I were exhausted but very happy to have conquered the household tasks that have been outstanding in preparation for the hundreds who toured our nearly century old home located in the West End of Allentown.

Always the hostess, I simply had to incorporate into my busy schedule the addition of some West End house tour treats for our visitors. Firstly, I made 2 gallons of homemade Lemonade, which was gone halfway through the event itself. No problem there though, as I served it in a large spigot beverage dispenser that I could just keep adding more water to. Sure, the last guests didn’t get the authentic sweet tart nectar, but they were very happy with the refreshing and cold lemon infused water!

Not having participated in the tour in the past, I was stupefied as to how many brownies to make, so I decided to quadruple a recipe and break out my tried and true 3/4 hotel pan. Worked out great, and they were a huge hit but next time I’ll have to do 2 hotel pans! Also gone within the first hours (and they were cut into tiny bites of yummo!) I still needed much more.

Adding also to the atmosphere of the beautiful day, I lastly decided to smoke a turkey breast in our urban oasis of a backyard, which was also included in the tour. Geeze, I love my Bradley smoker…. The entire neighborhood smelled of savory smokey meat for five hours, leaving those down the block scratching their heads while salivating in wonderment as they approached the house. Wasn’t long before the masses started asking when dinner was going to be ready! Served warm as a Father’s Day appetizer for family and lunch for the week, it was one of my better plans, teasing the hordes of people who visited our home while “not” actually cooking at all!

Urban Oasis, See the Smoker on the Right? Wish You Could Smell It!

All in all it was a fabulous day. We met new friends, saw many of our neighbors, contributed to our community, and our home is de-cluttered and looks better than it ever has before with all the odd jobs completed. Exhausting yes – escorting more than 400 individuals through our home… We slept well that night, however dreaming of the brownies we didn’t get to eat ourselves.

Guess I better get on another batch so there are no more sleepless nights.  The recipe you can find here at Doughmesstic. An unbeatable recipe for a rich, dark and divine treat, they are well worth the very few minutes of prep to make them yourself. My modifications of course included subbing the all purpose flour with Cup4Cup Gluten Free Flour and adding a dash of cinnamon for a savory element. Lastly, when the brownies came out of the oven, I sprayed them lightly with Pam and sprinkled sea salt on the top. Simply scrumptious!
